2018 QTOP A Grade Round 17

August 17, 2018

The Burleigh Bears and Tugun Seahawks will battle it out for a top five position as the Rugby League Gold Coast QTOP A Grade competition kicks off the final round this weekend. The Bears and Seahawks clash will be this week’s highlighted game for Round 17.

The Burleigh Bears have had a strong second half of the season, defeating top teams the Tweed Heads Seagulls and Currumbin Eagles in the last couple of rounds. “When we have had a settled side, we go quite well,” Burleigh Bears Coach Stuart Wilkins said. Complementing the players on the way they listen to advice and implement them within the game, Wilkins is hopeful the team can bring another win against the strong Tugun Seahawks side. Although the Bears have been hit with a blow with playmaker and halfback Matt Egan ruled out with a pectoral injury, Tyler Sparkes and Jaxson Paulo will be ones to rise the confidence of the team leading into this weekend. “We had an outstanding game of football against Bilambil and need to focus on the positives,” Wilkins said. The Bears are quietly confident their young side can ruffle a couple of the Seahawks feathers.

The Tugun Seahawks have been playing some of their best football these past couple of weeks and is fitting as finals are fast approaching. Seeing the return of impact players Rob Apanui, Ashley Harrison, Keanu Te Kiri and Corey Morris, the Seahawks squad is finally back to full strength. “The boys have kicked it up a notch and it definitely helps to have our full squad back from injury,” Tugun Seahawks Coach Clint Barends said. Pleased with the team’s performance despite their loss against the Burleigh Bears in Round 14, Barends knows the team is putting in all their effort and have been playing some quality football. “It has been do or die games for us these past couple of weeks and this week will be no different,” Barends said. The Seahawks have looked to their forwards to drive the team and are hungry to stay in the competition.

At other grounds, the Ormeau Shearers will host the Southport Tigers, battle of the Seagulls as Tweed takes on Runaway Bay and down sound the Bilambil Jets host the Currumbin Eagles.
