Rugby League Gold Coast QTOP A Grade Round 9

In what will be a 2017 Grand Final rematch, Burleigh Bears will face the Runaway Bay Seagulls. The Bears and Seagulls game will be the highlighted match of Round 9 of the Rugby League Gold Coast QTOP A Grade Competition.

Coming off a win against Tweed Heads last weekend, Burleigh Bears Coach Stuart Wilkins is exceptionally pleased with the effort and energy the boys displayed against a strong Tweed side. “The boys played a good quality game of football and completed sets beautifully, which is what we hadn’t been doing” Wilkins said. Wilkins saw results in the efforts that have been put into mentoring and guiding the young footballers. There has been an improvement from the team that met Bay in round three and the focus has shifted. The emphasis is not on the opposition it is on themselves and getting it right. The Bears know Runaway Bay are always competitive and that it will be a tough game. With hope to make the finals the Bears are confident if they play like they did last weekend, they will be hard to beat.

Runaway Bay started the season strong but continue to chase that consistency with the frequent run of player injuries. “We have reshuffled our side, even from last week and are fortunate that we have a lot of quality depth in the Club that we can call upon” Runaway Bay Seagulls Coach Nick Gleeson said.  The team have been dealt a tough blow with the huge loss of halfback Falani Arkell for the season and front rowers Kingi Akauola & Erick Koelbel. Centre Jamie Anderson will also be out this weekend fulfilling representative duties with the Queensland Rangers. Burleigh will be coming up against a different team to what they faced in round three, and Gleeson acknowledges it will be a hard game.

At other grounds, the Currumbin Eagles will take on the Ormeau Shearers, Southport Tigers will host Bilambil Jets and the Tugun Seahawks will play Tweed Heads Seagulls.
