A Grade Round 11

July 7, 2017

After teams have a Bye weekend, Round 11 of the Rugby League Gold Coast A Grade Competition will kick off this weekend with full anticipation.

Runaway Bay Seagulls v Tugun Seahawks

On Saturday, the Runaway Bay Seagulls will play host to the strong Tugun Seahawks. The Seahawks have had a light training week and are eager to get on the field this Saturday. Although just falling short to the Burleigh Bears 10-12, Coach Martin Griese was pleased with the team’s performance despite being short a couple of players. “We developed some good structures and our defence has improved significantly”, said Griese of the team’s performance. The Seahawks have been working on their discipline and attitude which they hope can be reflected on field this week. On the other hand, the Runaway Bay Seagulls are excited to take on the Seahawks as they fight to stay in the top two of the competition. Defeating the Currumbin Eagles in last weekend’s catch up match 50-10, the Seagulls are in top form.

Currumbin Eagles v Southport Tigers

Although dominated by the Runaway Bay Seagulls last weekend, the Currumbin Eagles will lead into the Southport clash positive to stay amongst finals contention. The Eagles will be hoping to come out strong as the Southport Tigers are hot on their trail on the ladder. To stay within finals contention, the Eagles will need to use techniques from last week and maintain their defence as the Tigers have some hard-hitting forwards. Although losing to the Tweed Heads Seagulls last round, the Tigers are positive leading into this week’s clash against the Eagles. “We chased the Seagulls down from their 18-0 lead and finished with a forced 20-27 loss”, said Tigers Coach Tim Cannard of the tough match. Cannard was relived the team can match up against one of the top in the competition and is hopeful for the finals series. The Tigers will see the return of full back Jordan Stewart and looks again to Mick Esdale and Scott Jensen for support this weekend.

Tweed Heads Seagulls v Bilambil Jets

Dominating last weekend’s match up against the Ormeau Shearers, the Bilambil Jets are leading into this weekend on a positive note. Working on rebuilding their structure and strength, the Jets are in form to challenge one of the top sides. As Cal Lynn and Josh Quinn both score a double, the Jets will be aiming to again defeat the Tweed Heads Seagulls and move up in ladder standings. Defeating the Seagulls in Round 2, the Bilambil Jets will be leading in the match knowing the Seagulls will want redemption. After a rest weekend, the Seagulls are starting on the back foot against the Jets.

Burleigh Bears v Ormeau Shearers

The undefeated Burleigh Bears will kick off late on Sunday, 4.30pm at Pizzey Park against the Ormeau Shearers. A light week of training for the Bears, Coach Stuart Wilkins is pleased with the lead up and attitude of the team. “We are focusing on our game, ruck speed and simple ball work this week”, said Wilkins. Anthony Gray, Daymeric Pelo and Dylan Pelo all stand out and will be ones to watch. Suffering another loss in the makeup round last weekend, the Shearers are gearing up for a tough match against the Bears. Unable to keep up for the southern Bilambil Jets, the Shearers week by week train to improve in their own game. Giving the team a boost, Shane Blow scored a double last weekend to put some points on the board.
